Hyperbaric oxygen · Kingston upon Thames

Hyperbaric oxygen in Kingston. Here’s what it actually is.

An oxygen session is an hour lying back in one of our two hyperbaric chambers, breathing oxygen-rich air through a soft mask while the pressure rises to 1.4–1.5 times normal. Your first one is £45, and Angelo explains everything before you go in.

“Hyperbaric” just means “higher pressure”. Inside the chamber, the air pressure is gently raised to 1.4–1.5 times normal, about what you’d feel four to five metres under water. Through the mask you breathe up to 95% oxygen; ordinary air is 21%. Your red blood cells are already 95–100% full of oxygen, so the pressure does something different: it lets extra oxygen dissolve into your plasma, the liquid part of your blood. It’s the same reason a sealed bottle keeps its fizz.

What do people book it for?

Most of our clients come for one of four things: better sleep, feeling calmer, recovering after training, a hard week or an operation (with their doctor’s OK), and more energy. Some feel a difference on the walk back to the station. For others it builds over a few weeks. That’s why we suggest a course rather than a one-off, and why nobody here will tell you it’s a magic wand.

Why book here and not somewhere else?

Every oxygen session at Transcend

  • Two hyperbaric chambers, so you can come with a partner or friend and go in side by side.
  • 1.4 and 1.5 ATA, about four to five metres under water, with oxygen through a soft mask.
  • A full hour, not a rushed half-session.
  • A health check first, every first visit, so we know it’s right for you today.
  • Angelo right outside the whole time. Windows all round, room to sit up, you hold the zip.
  • Open 8am to 8pm, every day, including evenings and weekends.

Recovering from surgery, a procedure or a birth?

Many of our clients book while they’re recovering: after an operation, after cosmetic surgery such as a facelift, or after having a baby. If that’s you:

Before you book

Claustrophobic? Ears? Phone? Answered.

If yours isn’t here, message Angelo. He answers the phone himself.

Is it safe for me?

Our two hyperbaric chambers run at 1.4 and 1.5 ATA (1.4 to 1.5 times normal air pressure), and used here for relaxation, recovery and general wellbeing. Before your first session we go through a short health check. Some things mean you should wait, a cold or blocked ears for example, and some mean you should speak to your doctor first. We will tell you either way.

Is it claustrophobic?

They look more intimidating from the outside because they’re black. Inside they’re white, roomy enough to sit up in, with windows on all sides. You control the zip, you can take your phone in, and Angelo is outside the whole time. Most people are asleep within ten minutes.

What happens in the hour?

You lie back on a pillow with a blanket and a soft mask, and breathe air with more oxygen in it than usual while the chamber gently pressurises. Your ears pop like on a plane. Then you read, listen or nap. You come out a little dozy and clear-headed.

Will one session do anything?

Honestly, it depends. Some people feel it on the walk back to the station; for others it’s felt more than seen. Oxygen works best as a course, which is why we start people on the Reset rather than a single session and why nobody here will tell you it’s a magic wand.

What do I wear? Can I use my phone?

Whatever you came in. You’ll just take your shoes off. Yes to phones, books and headphones in the chamber. The sauna and red light have their own private rooms.

Do you treat medical conditions?

No. We’re a recovery studio, not a clinic, and our therapies support relaxation and general wellbeing alongside your medical care, never instead of it. If we think you need a physio or a doctor before you need us, we’ll say so.
